There can be a gray area in business license laws between reselling tickets for face value and reselling tickets for profit, commonly know as "ticket scalping." A man was ticketed in Tuscaloosa, AL for trying to resell his season tickets before a Crimson Tide football game. The city of Corbin, Kentucky approved a business license fee of $100 for for-profit indoor concerts or events within the city limits, including music concerts or stage performances, but excluding wrestling events or circuses. Libyan despot Moammar Gadhafi’s visit to the United States for a meeting at the U.N. erupted into controversy when his plan to construct a giant Bedouin tent on Donald Trump’s property caught the public eye.

Trump had unknowingly rented a piece of his 113-acre Seven Spring estate in Bedford, New York to Gadhafi, but stepped in to have him removed upon learning of the situation. The State of Missouri has conducted an audit of more than 3,000 businesses in St. Louis and found that nearly a quarter of them have been operating with out a valid business license. Of the 3,000 businesses that were reviewed around 700 have been operating with out a license for the past 2 years while more than 200 have been unlicensed for 3 years. The audit was not meant to close down businesses that are not in compliance and the state hopes to use the data collected to better help businesses comply with business license laws.

It’s not very often Valley City, Alabama has fortune tellers looking to start a business in the community. The rare request was so unique, the City Council held a discussion to decide whether or not to grant approval of a business license.

South Carolina legislators are looking into amending the Code of Laws by adding section 5-7-3. The bill will allow for a towing company to operate within the corporate limits of a municipality without having to pay the business license tax unless the company maintains a place of business within the municipality.

The California Secretary of State has discovered more than 20 businesses that send deceptive solicitations to business entities that are on file with the state. The City Council in Eureka, California will be voting on amendments to the city’s rental housing program on Tuesday. Currently only property owners with four or more units are required to register for a business license. If the amendment is passed, all property owners with rental property will be required to get a business license. Fees will be $15 for the first unit and $5 for each additional unit owned by the same landlord. It’s estimated that the fees will generate $32,000 for the city.

Despite getting all the permits required for a hot dog cart, the business license office of Oregon City, OR shut down a local man's business before it even opened. Officials say there's a city ordinance prohibiting vending carts, and the license was issued by mistake. San Jacinto, CA is making a move to track down those businesses that have not paid their business license fees. The city is specifically going to use utility billing records to identify rental property owners and managers who are required to pay business license fees under a city ordinance. The city council of Portola, California has passed new legislation regarding business licenses, home occupancy permits and solicitors' permits that will take effect September 15. Business license fees will be based on the amount of the company's business receipts. There are 3 types of home occupancy permits, which are determined by the degree of impact upon the neighborhood. The California Senate passed the Senate Bill 731 allowing massage therapists to be able to practice throughout the state without the need to get individual city permits.
