Voters to Decide on Palo Alto, CA Business License Tax

The City of Palo Alto, CA is one step away from instituting a city business license tax. The City Council voted on July 20th to place a business license tax ordinance on the November 3rd ballot.

While the plan is unpopular with businesses, the council members agreed that it is needed to help shore up the city’s revenue. The tax would require businesses to pay $34-$95 per employee based on the type of business with caps of $20,000 to $30,000. If voters approve the new tax businesses would get a grace period to file in the first half of 2010.
