Libyan despot Moammar Gadhafi’s visit to the United States for a meeting at the U.N. erupted into controversy when his plan to construct a giant Bedouin tent on Donald Trump’s property caught the public eye.
Trump had unknowingly rented a piece of his 113-acre Seven Spring estate in Bedford, New York to Gadhafi, but stepped in to have him removed upon learning of the situation. Trump contacted Bedford officials about the nuisance, and the town quickly deemed Gadhafi’s tent was illegal because he was never approved a permit or license to construct a temporary residence.
All municipalities require some sort of building permit when constructing a new structure, including businesses. Permit applications are specific to the construction project so it’s best to work closely with your local government to make sure you are in compliance.
