Business License Fee Increase Possible For Big-Box Retailers

City officials in Mobile, Alabama are considering increasing business license fees for businesses with gross receipts of more than $4 million per year. This increase is targeted at big-box retailers such as Sam’s Club. The city is concerned that upcoming state required business license law changes for these stores will have a negative impact on revenue. Currently, a big-box retailer is required to have a separate business license for each “business” within the store such as grocery, pharmacy, clothing retail, etc. Next year the state will change the law to only require one license for the store as a whole as long as none of the business areas contribute more than 10% to overall sales.
