A lawsuit filed in Jefferson County, Alabama on occupational taxes was amended recently to include business fees. The suit was filed on behalf of a resident that claimed the law passed in August allowing these taxes is unconstitutional.
The new law allows the County Commission to assess taxes on wages and add business license fees to area businesses. The lawsuit being filed seeks class-action status and if it prevails will require a refund of all occupational taxes and business license fees since last August.
