Vinton, VA Draws Criticism Over Business License Fees

The Town of Vinton, Virginia is drawing criticism from business owners over recent tactics used to collect delinquent business license fees. Instead of being billed their actual yearly fee, businesses were sent bills for $60,000. The town used a process called statutory billing which allows the town to estimate how much a delinquent taxpayer would owe. The town is rethinking this approach due to negative feedback. All businesses that were billed for $60,000 were in the end only charged for the actual fees owed based on their gross receipts for the year.
