Jefferson County’s Business License Woes Continue

Jefferson County, Alabama is battling two separate court cases regarding its occupational tax and business license fees. The first case is regarding the county’s previous occupational tax law and is currently on appeal before the Alabama Supreme Court. The county is appealing a judge’s order to repay workers and businesses $47.8 million in collected fees. The second case is regarding the county’s new occupational tax law and is being tried in Montgomery County Circuit Court. If this lawsuit is not dismissed the county could lose $75 million per year in revenue. To that end, the County Commission president has asked department heads to prepare two budgets for 2011, one with the occupational tax and one without.
