Local city counsils continue to seek new approaches to regulating local businesses. Some are grappling with whether not-for-profit enterprises are required to file for a business license. Others are considering greater cooperation with state or county regulatory agencies.
The Havre County Montana Planning and Development Committee is no exception. After spending considerable time and effort drafting a business license, members recently decided to scrap the idea in favor of requesting businesses to voluntarily register to conduct business.
The online edition of the Havre Daily News reported on Wednesday that the recommendation to reverse course on creating a formal license will go before the council on Monday for discussion and a vote. If approved, business owners will be asked to register by August 31.
Mayor Tim Solomon indicated that if a business fails to register, and zoning changes for its location, it could be grandfathered in. However, its resale value would be reduced.
Havre City Council’s decision to change course highlights the need for businesses to stay abreast of business license requirements.
