On my drive home from the office last night, my mind wandered to the list of items I wanted to tackle when I walked in the door. Hug my wife and kids, fire up the BBQ, enjoy dinner, storm the dishes, read to the kids before bedtime, etcetera. I smiled at the thought that a family man’s work is never done.
A business operator’s ‘to do’ list is usually long and exhaustive, and similarly rarely done. There are generally a bevy of administrative tasks to attend to, separate and apart from offering a product or service. The task of renewing business licenses may fall near the bottom of the administrative task list.
Unfortunately, failure to renew business licenses can often result in late penalties and other repercussions. Even towns such as scenic Friday Harbor, Washington slap businesses with extra fees for late renewals. Fortunately for Friday Harbor businesses, in spite of a steep 50% penalty, a late renewal is still a bargain at $63. However, a late business license renewal in other cities, counties, or with state agencies carries a much higher price tag. For instance, re-registering for a collection agency branch office license that is delinquent for more than 30 days with the Washington Department of Licensing will set a business back $588.
A leader I respect at our company once told me, ‘that which gets measured, gets done’. Items that receive our attention and focus get done. When we shine our light on something, it gets done. So, save yourself time and money. Remember to shine your light on your business licenses, and make sure they get renewed on time.
