Multi-Industry Companies Face Bevy of Licensing Challenges

Companies that span multiple industries face taller licensing hurdles than those that are narrowly focused in one industry. One such hurdle is the volume of government agencies a company will have to contact to determine the exact licensing requirements.

Let’s take a salt production company that mines, manufactures, stores and distributes salt products. At first glance it might seem like a company like this will need just a few mining permits. This is true, but it does not tell the whole story.

Producing and manufacturing salt will likely require a variety of environmental permits from the EPA and other local government agencies. Permits for ground water and air pollution and hazardous waste generation could be required due to business activities.

Once the salt is manufactured it may be stored in warehouses. If this salt is food-grade, the warehouse facility will likely need to register as a food facility with the FDA and other public health agencies.

Finally when the salt is ready to be distributed this company will need to be registered as a motor carrier and obtain operating authority to transport across state lines. The business will need to register with the DOT and be classified as a unified carrier in most states distribution is occurring.

Determining business licenses and permits for companies in multiple industries can be a pain-staking process.
