Because of the nature of work involved with certain industries, states will often have industry-specific licenses established. The licenses will help for organization, but more importantly allow for authorities to track companies and ensure they are following rules and guidelines drafted to protect consumers.
Engineering firms are no different. Companies in this industry will likely find licensing applications specifically for them. The type of work these firms do will greatly affect consumers if done poorly, thus it is important that officials know high-quality work is being performed.
Many states, such as Wyoming, have engineering firm licenses that accompany licenses for individual engineers. In Wyoming’s case the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors has a business entity application for engineering firms. This application also happens to be used by land surveying firms.
In Pennsylvania however there are no licensing requirements for entities themselves. Only individuals need to be licensed. The Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists in Pennsylvania does have a fictitious name application for engineers, land surveyors and geologists. If your business has “Engineer” or “Survey” or “Geology” in the title of your company’s name, than a fictitious name application form will need to be submitted.
