Nevada Business Portal Under Fire

Candidates for Nevada Secretary of State are sparring over the Nevada business portal which allows businesses to register their business and apply for a business license in one place.  According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Challenger Rob Lauer thinks the business portal website, which cost $4.5 million to develop, will help businesses, but will allow the state to collect more taxes.  Incumbent Ross Miller stated that the business portal does help the state collect taxes, but its primary role is to streamline the process of establishing a business in Nevada.  Prior to the business portal’s creation business owners had to go to several different places to get information on how to establish a business in Nevada.  Now everything is at a one-stop shop.

In addition to his opposition to the business portal, Lauer blames Miller for not doing more to protest a recent business license tax increase.  For his part, Miller says the tax increase plan was created by the Nevada legislature “behind closed doors,” according to the Review-Journal story, and not suggested by him.

If this back and forth between the two candidates is any indication, the election on November 2nd could mean possible changes for the Nevada business portal.  These one-stop shop portals can make starting a business easier which in turn encourages business growth.  Business growth is always good news for a state’s economy.
