Restaurant with Unique Name Prompts Creative Licensing Solution

My grandfather always said, if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, chances are, it’s a duck.  I always elicited an annoyed look when I retorted, “What if it walks like a duck, but talks like a goose?

The City Council in the city of Clive, Iowa considered a similar question recently when the owners of a new establishment called Bar 2060 applied for a liquor license.

Bar 2060 is a restaurant that plans to serve Hawaiian and American food.  However, the City Manager is concerned that the restaurant’s name will attract mostly bar customers.

Consequently, the council reviewed a recommendation that the license be granted, but treated like a bar until the business is able to prove sufficient food sales.

In the end, the council decided to grant a Class C liquor license as a bar and restaurant.  The council plans to review the issue again in three months.

The scenario that played out in Clive with Bar 2060 is an important lesson for would-be restaurant proprietors.  Consider your business name carefully.
