Like most industries, licensing requirements for Motor Vehicle Dealers vary from state to state. In some cases the application process for a license can be complicated, while in other cases the application process is pretty simple. But despite the difficulty of these processes, states will typically issue licenses for the same types of dealers.
Virginia is one example of a state that has a more complicated application process. The Motor Vehicle Dealer Board requires a general dealer license application to be submitted, but along with this applicants will have to submit a bond, certificate of zoning compliance and criminal history background check. Furthermore, depending on the exact nature of the business activity applicants may have to submit applications for a salesperson license/dealer-operator & salesperson test and dealer license plates.
Kentucky on the other hand involves much less paperwork. Kentucky just has one general dealer license application form that is required to be submitted. In this application you will be asked to fill out the general application portion, a financial statement and a certificate of assumed name form.
No matter where you live, it is important to carefully read about the licensing requirements you face. For motor vehicle dealers, the license application process can vary widely, but the licenses being applied for will be similar. Virginia and Kentucky are a perfect example of two states with very different application processes, but who still offer the same types of licenses. In each state you can apply for licenses as a new motor vehicle dealer, motorcycle dealer, wholesale dealer and auction dealer to name a few.
