Business owners in Tucson, AZ received a bit of good news last week. The Tucson City Council voted 4-3 to keep business license renewal fees at the same rate; however, the Council will keep the issue on the table for future discussions.
If the increase would have been implemented, businesses would have had to pay an additional $12 bringing the total fee to $57. The fee increase would have generated an additional $480,000 in revenue annually and would go to help the city’s huge budget shortfall.
The fee increase proposal was not popular amongst local business owners. Many owners said any type of increase in these economic times would be harmful. Even the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce indicated the proposal would not be business friendly.
Fortunately Tucson business owners won’t have to pay additional business license taxes, at least for the time being. Hopefully city leaders of Tucson can find alternative measures to help balance their budget, and future mismanagement of money will be limited.
