The State of Delaware has cancelled its 5 cent deposit fee for recyclable containers in favor of a new 4 cent fee to be paid by retailers. As part of this new program all retailers that sell beverages in recyclable containers must register for a Retail Beverage Container Business License. The license has no fee, but retailers must have a separate license for each store location. This license must be obtained in addition to the state’s general business license.
To make the transition easier the State Department of Revenue has automatically registered existing businesses for the new license. Licenses are set to be issued later this month. Any business that does not receive a license should contact the Department of Revenue to obtain a license.
Retailers must submit the 4 cent per container fee monthly to the Department of Revenue on department provided coupons. All funds collected with this program go to the Delaware Recycling Fund which gives grants and loans to help improve recycling efforts throughout the state.
