Fernley, NV City Council Tables Proposed Child Care License Changes

The City Council in Fernley, Nevada has tabled a proposal that would change licensing regulations for child care businesses.  The new regulations would only affect in-home child care businesses with 1-4 children.  Larger child care providers are already regulated by the state and the city.  The state has no jurisdiction over smaller, in-home child care providers.

Proposed regulations would include full background checks of in-home child care providers.  The city currently relies on site visits to check up on providers, but has run into problems with inspectors not being let in to ask questions.  According to the Reno Gazette-Journal some council members questioned the cost required for background checks.  There are also concerns that the method proposed of conducting the background checks through the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office may not be feasible.  The proposal has been tabled so further work can be done to resolve these issues.
