The City Council of Murrieta, CA is considering passing a new law requiring all businesses to check the immigration status of their new employees in order to obtain a business license. To be able to verify their new employees’ status, Murrieta businesses will have to use the E-Verify system. The system was developed by the Department of Homeland Security and is programmed to verify the employees’ Social Security and immigration status.
If passed, the new law will be applicable to new business licenses and business license renewals. Businesses that do not comply with the new requirements would have to pay a $100 fine for the first violation and could face revocation of their business license for one year and a $ 500 fine for a third violation in a period of two years.
