West Virginia Unemployment Fund In Trouble

The unemployment fund in West Virginia is in danger of running out of money.  In the short term the state is hoping to boost the unemployment fund with $30 million of state money.  Legislators are also looking for long term solutions to fix the fund.  The first idea is to charge employers more unemployment tax.  Currently the employers cost more than they pay.  Another idea is to penalize employers who do not pay by revoking their business licenses.

The threat of losing a business license has been a common tactic lately to make business owners comply with regulations.  In Arizona you could lose your business license if you do not verify the citizenship status of your employees.  If West Virginia decides to implement their plans to fix the unemployment fund, the state should make sure that business owners are aware of the consequences before the plan is implemented.
