The holiday season is underway and many families are stocking up on Christmas staples like sweets and spirits.

Unfortunately, a number of states are looking to cash in on the increased demand for booze and have upped the cost of both businesses licenses and alcohol licenses.

Many small businesses, which are still struggling from the after-effects of the recent global economic downturn, will probably pass this added cost along to Christmas shoppers – making the festivities that much more expensive.

One liquor store owner in Augusta, Georgia, told wrdw.com that city officials are picking on everyone by ramping up the cost of business licenses.

Bill Prince told the news provider: “Why pick on a few when you can pick on everyone?”

Prince added: “What’s the difference between a fee and a tax? It still comes out of your pocket.”

Down in Texas, however, amber nectar is becoming the new “black gold” as a raft of business license requests have been submitted by alcohol retailers in the state.
