Massachusetts town to review liquor licensing laws

A meeting is to be held in Danvers, Massachusetts, to discuss the subject of business licenses for liquor sales.

According to the Salem News, a number of bars, stores and restaurants have let their licenses fall into a state of limbo after closing their premises.

There are concerns at the number of businesses keeping their licenses running indefinitely after closing their doors.

Local selectmen wish to put an 18-month limit on how long companies can hold the licenses without pouring a drop to stop them being sold to big corporations for hundreds of thousands of dollars, which are not pumped back into the local economy.

Selectman Gardner Trask is spearheading the drive to have the time limit installed and told the newspaper that it would be in the town’s best interests.

Trask explained that the current set-up makes it difficult for small business owners to afford a license as larger firms can simply outbid them.
