Officials in Clark County, Nevada, have voted in favor of a moratorium on processing new business license applications from taverns as they work to clarify the relevant rules and regulations.
Under the agreement, the County Commission will not process any new applications for 70 days.
Instead, officials will use this period to draw up a comprehensive definition of what actually constitutes a “tavern,” and which venues are allowed to operate gaming facilities and which are not.
It is hoped that, by clarifying the rules, it will be possible to prevent local firms from applying for a business license for a tavern and then making most of their profits through gaming, the Las Vegas Sun has reported.
As well as making the business license application system more efficient, such a move will also enhance the local taxation system and potentially help bring in more revenues from currently-untaxed slot machines located in smaller establishments.
According to newly-compiled figures from the Peterborough Examiner, gambling accounts for 40 per cent of all business revenues in Las Vegas, with bars generating just 15 per cent.
