Small traders setting up stalls at the South Pasadena Farmers’ Market will be required to have a business license under new rules being put into place by local authorities.
Until now, traders working at the California market have been exempt from paying license fees, with this policy also in place at most other cities and towns in the state.
However, according to the South Pasadena Patch, vendors will be required to pay a $145 fee for a business license for the coming year, with those who don’t meet the deadline likely to be removed from the market.
This comes on top of the 12 percent of sales revenues that traders are required to hand over to the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, up from 10 percent since last summer.
Despite strong opposition, officials have argued that the move will bring market traders in line with other retailers by making business licenses universally compulsory.
“Is it fair to other businesses that pay the license if we don’t require the license from vendors?” asked assistant city manager Sergio Gonzalez, according to the paper. “We have to enforce the law of the business license requirement.”
This comes as businesses operating in central California try to get back on their feet after days of heavy storms.
