Dave Kaptain, city councilman for Elgin, Illinois, has called for that city’s business license program to be re-examined.
He is not calling for the fee to change, the Courier News reported, but is asking for clarification of what businesses get in exchange for paying it.
This is the second year of the program, which saw 2,500 businesses applying for licenses in 2010. Chief financial officer Colleen Lavery told the news provider that 400 firms are yet to apply.
Fees range from $35 to $500 a year depending on the business and those operating downtown where construction work continues will not have to pay for a license.
Mr. Kaptain and mayor Ed Schock have also called for the city council to look again at a decision to adopt the same food license inspection fees as seen in Kane County.
Restaurant owners have said that they cannot afford the fees, which have climbed by hundreds of dollars each year.
