Businesses operating in Hall County, Georgia, are going to be asked to volunteer for a sales tax scheme in an effort to collect more taxes for the state.
Hall County will provide information on the businesses in the area to the Department of Revenue, which will identify those that need to collect more sales taxes depending on their classification.
Speaking to the Gainesville Times, Hall County business license director Susan Rector said: “A lot of businesses say they don’t sell a product when in fact they do.
“Say you hire someone to fix your washer or dryer and a part has gone out. They have to bring in a new part and that is a product.”
She stressed that this does not mean businesses are being fraudulent, but that they do not realize that they should be complying with the regulations.
It is one of four counties in Georgia to take part in the program to compare state and local databases, which will also highlight the companies who have reported sales taxes but do not hold a business license.
