The Indianapolis Department of Code Enforcement conducted a number of spot checks at a scrap refuse site recently, making sure that businesses operating in the industry had the correct business license.
According to TheIndyChannel.com, people taking scrap from their home do not need a license, but people operating a business selling scrap need a city business license in order to do so.
During recent checks, more than a dozen people working in the industry were found by the department to not have a refuse hauling license.
Agency spokesman Adam Collins told the news provider: “It basically means they don’t have insurance, and if they have something attached to the top of the vehicle or hanging out of the trunk, the odds of not only someone getting hurt, but that the person themselves is not going to be responsible for it, is pretty great.”
The license costs around $250, the website reported, and those who fail get a permit after being caught could face a $200 fine.
