A convenience store in Waterloo, Iowa, could hold onto its business license if approved by the city council.
Five Star Snacks & More had been denied a liquor license as people in the neighborhood had described the store as a nuisance, the WCF Courier reported.
However, store owner Muhammad Chaudhry has appealed the decision to the Iowa Alcoholic Beverage Division and could win his case on the condition that he would provide better monitoring around the building at least once an hour when open. This includes the requirement to tell loiterers to move on and report anyone consuming alcohol in public to the police.
Mr. Chaudhry must also post signs prohibiting loitering and drinking alcohol, as well as clean up litter in the area surrounding his store.
If approved, state officials would then also have to agree to the overturned decision.
Last week, a bar in Waterloo was denied a liquor license by the city council and by the police department, making it the fifth business to be denied a permit in the past year.
