Changes to business license rules issued in S.C.

Business owners operating in Aiken, South Carolina, will soon see changes to the way they renew their business licenses after the city council voted on a new ordinance change.

Business owners will no longer have to show their gross receipts when getting their license renewed unless the city finds any irregularities, the Aiken Standard reported.

Under the current rules, businesses must hand over their gross receipts for the year for the business license fee to be calculated accordingly.

According to the news provider, the new process was introduced after it was discovered that the city was issuing inaccurate fees by incorrectly calculating the size and trade of businesses, which led to some companies paying too little or too much.

Businesses in the city have been calling for a change to the system for almost a year.

The city council also agreed at a meeting that the renewal date for business licenses would be due on August 1 rather than July 31.
