Illinois restaurant shuts amid unpaid business license issue

An Italian restaurant in Chicago, Illinois, has temporarily closed after losing its retail business license from unpaid taxes.

Gioco put up signs to alert customers of the problem on Wednesday (March 23rd), noting that the eaterie will be closed until further notice, Chicago Business reported.

Co-owner Jerry Kleiner told the news provider that the restaurant had fallen behind in sales tax payments, despite the fact that the restaurant is making money, and said that he is working with the Illinois Department of Revenue to resolve the matter.

Mr Kleiner explained that as a part-owner of KDK Restaurants Inc, which used to own a number of businesses in the city, finances had become a problem.

Indeed, the business now has just one restaurant, Red Light, after two others closed for good last year after nearly two decades in operation.

“We’re going to make good on the taxes owed. Gioco is very profitable. It just got caught in the fire,” he told the news source.

The business owner said the success of Gioco had helped to keep Red Light in businesses.
