Proposed business district in Calif. to boost business licensing

A group has proposed creating a business district in San Mateo, California, to boost revenues from business licensing.

According to the San Francisco Examiner, the Downtown San Mateo Association has suggested creating a shopping district that would pump more money into the city and help pull it out of the recession.

Named the Property and Business Improvement District, it would tax property owners, raising an expected $782,000 a year.

Business owners would be charged between 4.7 and 12 cents per square foot, the news provider reported.

Executive director of the association, Rob Edwards, told the news source that some businesses are in favor of the proposals after seeing successes in places like San Francisco’s Union Square, while others are opposed to it.

The San Mateo Area Chamber of Commerce is as yet undecided on the matter.

Mr. Edwards claimed that he had verbal support from 36 per cent of the votes he needs for a petition of at least 50 per cent of the assessment value.
