Business owners in Redwood City, California, could likely see an increase to their business license tax after the City Council approved proposals. The city’s hotel occupancy tax could also increase if residents also approve the plans ahead of the November elections.
Urging city staff to rally support for the taxes among businesses, councilwoman Barbara Pierce told the Patch: “As you look around downtown, there are small businesses that aren’t thriving. And we need to be helping them to understand the situation, and what we are doing to work with them.”
If approved, the $37 fee for business licenses would increase to $59 over three years.
Businesses with full-time employees would also see a fee hike from $24 to $38 in the hope that the city’s $2.6 million deficit would be improved.
According to the news provider, the taxes would generate $1.5 million a year.
