A nuclear plant in Montpelier, Vermont, needs to apply for a new business license, environmental officials have said.
The Associated Press reported that Vermont Yankee’s water quality permit will expire next March along with its federal license.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission may have not realized this, however, as it already issued a business license extension for the plant covering the next 20 years.
Vermont Yankee has not yet applied for a license renewal, although Deb Markowitz, Vermont’s Secretary for Natural Resources, said this should not be a problem.
Meanwhile, Vermont attorney general Bill Sorrell has said closing the plant is economically viable. Speaking to the Brattleboro Reformer, he said: “Vermont [state] has a valid role to play on the decision for a nuclear power plant to be built or for one to be relicensed past its original license. We think we have strong federal statutes and we have the Supreme Court of the United States support our position.”
