The Dayton Daily News has discovered that businesses operating in Ohio can still operate once their business license has been revoked.
A spokeswoman from the Secretary of State’s Office, Luisa Barone, admitted that the state does not keep a list of businesses that have cancelled licenses.
Therefore, firms can go on unnoticed in the state even if they owe taxes.
However, the news provider noted that this is still unlawful and businesses found without a license, or an article of incorporation, could pay a fine of up to $5,000.
Gary Gudmundson, spokesman for the Department of Taxation, told the news source: “This is not an area we felt that we could realistically monitor on an active basis.
“We were not out there checking door-to-door on an active basis to make sure everybody whose articles have been canceled were complying with the law.”
He explained that situations can be discovered when a business seeks a loan, buys property or goes to sell their business.
