The city council of Montgomery, Alabama, this week passed a new ordinance introducing changes to the city’s liquor business licenses.
Now, any business that applies for a restaurant retail liquor permit must earn at least 60% of its revenue from the sale of food, the Montgomery Advertiser reported.
These restaurants remain exempt from the rule that establishments selling on-premise alcohol must not be within 250 feet of a church, school or residential area.
Other changes will require applicants for off and on-premise licenses to go before the city council for approval, rather than get automatic approval (unless faced with local opposition).
The new ordinance means that four business owners currently seeking to obtain liquor permits will now be carried to the next meeting and come under the new law.
