A Maryland liquor business license has been sold at public auction, according to one business owner.
Speaking during a public hearing, James Binau, owner of Old Orchard Liquors in Hagerstown, said that the liquor permit of Wolfe’s on the Square in Williamsport has been sold by this illegal method.
The Herald Mail reported that the incident has led Washington County liquor officials to put a message out to business owners in the region that liquor licenses cannot be sold under any circumstances.
“A license is absolutely not sold,” said Robert L. Everhart, chairman of the Board of License Commissioners for Washington County. “The only way to obtain a license is through the issue of a new license or the transfer of an existing one … If you think you bought a license, someone told you wrong.”
