A request for a general business license for Third Avenue Grocery in Moultrie, Georgia, has been denied by the city council.
The application was made by business owner Calvin Simpson, who plans to appeal the decision.
According to the Moultrie Observer, the city attorney had expressed concerns about the application and public safety, suggesting that the business’s location was unsuitable.
Councilwoman Angela Castellow, who was one of the decision-makers on the application, said that she denied the license because of Mr. Simpson’s criminal history, the last incident dating back to 2005. It is too soon for his character to have changed, Castellow suggested. Some of Mr. Simpson’s past offenses include selling alcohol to a minor.
Another reason for the unanimous vote against the application was attributed to the location of the business, which councilwoman Margaret Mathis said was a drug-infested area. Mathis said that opening a grocery store here would lead to further problems.
