City considers business license for secondhand sellers

City officials in Evesham, New Jersey, are considering a new law that would require those selling secondhand goods to own a business license.

It is hoped that the ruling would prevent the sale of stolen goods like gold. The license would cost $100 a year, and businesses would be charged an additional fee of $25 per year per employee. Some businesses would be exempt from the license, including auto dealerships and repair shops, bookstores, charity stores, flea markets and garage sales.

The Central Record reports that the ordinance has been met with criticism from some city officials who claim that it would burden businesses by increasing the cost of doing business in the city.

Deputy Mayor Joe Howarth also raised concerns about issuing the business licenses, as the council does not approve any other licenses in the city.
