Business licenses ‘protect the public’

Business licenses protect the public and it is important that consumers seek the services of licensed professionals, one city manager has said.

Kurt Sawyer, interim city manager in Mesquite, Nevada, told the Desert Valley Times that there are people in the state who are cheaper, but might not be licensed.

“People need to know when they get work done, if the person doing the work doesn’t have a contractor’s license, they don’t have a warranty on the work,” he explained.

“If someone without a contractor’s license works on your property and gets hurt on the job, you are technically responsible for worker’s compensation. You can be sued.”

He stressed that taking on an unlicensed practitioner is taking a risk, while a licensed contractor, although more expensive, is covered.

Mr. Sawyer also warned against scams.

“When there’s no license, the consumer has no protection,” he told the news provider, explaining that contractors with a permit have a background check to make sure they do not have a criminal license.
