City officials in Long Branch, New Jersey, are considering changes to mercantile business licenses as new technologies emerge.
The city has been discussing a change in the application process over several weeks that would require individuals to get a more formal review from the police department, explained David Roach, health director at the Long Branch Department of Health.
Speaking at a workshop meeting, he said that the application process should be changed to have a “more aggressive police review,” Atlanticville reported.
He suggested implementing the MorphoTrak system, which specializes in fingerprinting and performing background checks, to speed up the process.
However, the technology would cost $41 for each business owner, in addition to the $50 annual fee they pay for a license.
Director of public safety Alphonse Muolo supported the move. He said that using MorphoTrak would “firm up the city’s liability, where we’re not giving out retail licenses to someone that really shouldn’t have it.”
