Man forced to pay 4 years’ worth of license fees

A businessman has been forced to pay four years’ worth of business license fees after violating city code.

Fred Shorett, who is a councilman in San Bernardino, California, had been operating a home business in commercial printing and packaging without a license.

He was found out after city attorney James F. Penman filed a complaint to the District Attorney’s Office, the Sun reported.

Mr. Shorett has paid a total of $240 in penalties and fees. According to the news provider, he did not realize that he needed a business license to operate from his home.

“Once the matter was brought to his attention, he admitted the lapse and promptly took steps to remedy the situation by obtaining the required certification and paying back fees for the years he was not in compliance,” deputy district attorney John Goritz said.

The news comes after Kurt Sawyer, interim city manager in Mesquite, Nevada, told the Desert Valley Times that business licenses protect the public and urged consumers to seek the services of licensed professionals.
