New business license introduced for MD landlords

Landlords with property in Berlin, Maryland, will now have to apply for a rental license each year rather than their standard business license in order to lease property to tenants.

This is after the city introduced the change to stop wayward landlords disobeying the housing code.

The change will give “more teeth” to current codes in the city, planning and zoning director Chuck Ward told The Dispatch.

Under the new measure, the city will be able to revoke the license of the landlord should they be found of going against the housing code.

Landlords will have to pay $10 for the license, but the fines will be considerable in order to deter them from violations.

Other changes will see landlords allowing their properties to be inspected by town officials, the news provider stated, or the license will be revoked.

“I think we want to be tough, but to be fair,” said Mayor Gee Williams.
