The way in which business and liquor licenses are handled in Cape Girardeau, Missouri is set to change.
Officials have given their first round of approval to measures that will allow the city to withhold a license until applicants comply with city codes, the South East Missourian reported.
Currently, the City Council can only withhold a business license if a company owes the city any taxes or fees.
According to assistant city manager Heather Brooks, this often caused confusion.
Ms. Brooks told the paper that occasionally a business owner would assume the issuance of a license was synonymous with overall city approval that codes had been met, when this was not the case.
Changes to business licensing ordinances are set to clarify the process for residents and improve the management of the licensing process.
The City of Cape Girardeau is keen to support businesses through efficient services and recognizes the importance of business for the community.
In an attempt to foster growth, the city offers several forms of business investment opportunities that facilitate development in the region.
Financial aid and investment support programmes for businesses includes tax increment financing, tales tax rebates and development agreements, and community improvement districts.
