Metal collectors in Richmond County, Georgia are continuing to flout business licensing laws.
The Augusta Chronicle reported an increase in the number of people putting signs on the side of trucks stating they buy scrap metal or will pay for metal without business licenses.
County sheriff investigator Kendall Brown explained that, just because it is individuals displaying these signs, does not make them exempt from the law.
Moreover, according to Mr. Brown, these “fly-by night entrepreneurs” are preventing the police from catching real metal thieves.
Opportunists are increasingly paying thieves, knowingly or unknowingly, for metal goods and finding themselves in jail.
With the price of metal increasing, theft is growing across the US.
Homeowners are being advised to ensure that safety measures are in place when leaving their properties unattended to prevent metal thieves breaking in.
Drivers are also being warned to protect their vehicles from criminals looking for scrap.
