Mixed response to Moreno Valley business license amnesty

A business license amnesty in Moreno Valley, California has proved a success, but council officials have had a mixed response.

Hundreds of operators have been in touch with the council enquiring about their status and whether they are compliant, according to The Press Enterprise, but officials have had mixed feelings about the outcome of the amnesty.

Speaking to the newspaper, city treasury operations division manager Brooke McKinney explained, “It’s always good when you get a few more businesses into compliance. But I wouldn’t call the program widely successful.”

There is concern introducing a regular, annual amnesty, would encourage businesses to delay paying fines and fees.

Business license applications fall into three categories, A, B and C, each with differing levels of cost.

Category A businesses must pay 25 cents per $1,000 of gross receipts; Category B 50 cents per $1,000 of gross receipts; and Category C 75 cents per $1,000 of gross receipts.
