Two restaurants in Park Ridge, Illinois have had their business licenses suspended after sanitation concerns were raised.
The Department of Environmental Health suspended the licenses of Jade House and the Original House of Pancakes on the grounds of pest problems and malfunctioning refrigerators, the Parkridge Herald-Advocate reported.
A third establishment was also fined $2,000 before the new year after health inspectors reported continued sanitation problems.
According to a food-sanitation report, Jade House was closed by Park Ridge officials three times in 2011 because of cockroach infestations.
The Original House of Pancakes was closed by the Health Department twice in June 2011 as the result of a reportedly faulty refrigerator and a fruit-fly infestation, which health inspector Tim Schwarz told the newspaper was probably the worst he had ever seen.
Fruit flies generally breed in drains, which have germs living inside them. Consequently, having them in and around a food establishment poses a health risk.
