Augusta club owner charged after lying to get business license

An owner of a teen club in Augusta, Georgia has been charged with a felony after lying to get a business license.

Patrick T. Walton, owner of Magic City, which was closed following a fatal shooting in January, is facing one count of giving a false statement in a government matter, the Augusta Chronicle reported.

Police found that Mr. Walton had misled officials over the nature of the business he had intended to open, which led to his arrest on February 8th.

He had told fire inspector lieutenant Michael Beckham that he was going to operate a mercantile business, not the teen club it turned out to be.

Mr. Walton was released from prison on $4,600 bond, sheriff’s officials told the newspaper.

At the time of the shooting it was estimated that there were 200 people in their late teens and a few in their early 20′s in the building. However, they were not protected by duty officers, because the establishment was improperly licensed.
