The collection of business license fees in Nevada has been put on hold, as officials have reached a legislative impasse.
Secretary of state Ross Miller is unable to collect the state’s $200 annual license fee from 60,000 non-paying businesses until he gets further directions from legislators and the courts in the state.
The Legislative Commission had this week (Wednesday February 15th) deferred action on Mr. Miller’s proposed regulation that would have seen license fees collected from many limited liability corporations and other businesses that claim they are exempt.
Under state law home-based businesses with an annual income of less than $27,000 are exempt from paying the business license fee.
However, Mr. Miller wants to put an end to this practice on the grounds that the exemption is costing the state more than $10 million a year because bowling alleys, nail salons and many LLCs are claiming exemption.
In Nevada’s Quarterly Business Report, Mr. Miller claimed that building the foundation for a new economic development strategy would be vital in improving business in the state.
