A business license has been granted to the American Legion Post to open an electronic bingo establishment in Brighton, Alabama.

Once business commences, it is hoped that the operation will provide 300 machines for people of the city.

Speaking on behalf of American Legion Post, Ken Boyd explained that the charity bingo hall has been renovated to meet the city’s legal standards.

However, Jefferson County chief deputy Randy Christian says that the Sheriff’s Office has yet to meet with the applicant and has no interest in doing so.

“My office received a call regarding that and we informed them that the sheriff has no interest in such a meeting, his stance on these gambling establishments is clear and our advice is to comply with the law,” he said.

What’s more, the Sheriff’s Office has this week closed down another gambling established in Grayson Valley and seized their machines.

The American Legion is chartered and incorporated charity and has been so since 1919. It claims to be a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness.

Businesses in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina are unhappy with plans for a new bar and grill, which is currently in the process of getting a business license.

The food establishment, called Insomnia, will open in the old premises of Groove Ultra Lounge, which locals fear will reignite problems previously experienced on the site, WMBF News reported.

Groove Ultra Lounge was the location of several shootings, stabbings and fights before finally closing down.

In May 2011, it was reported that shots were fired into the club when a fight broke out.

Business owners are now worried that the opening of Insomnia will create similar problems.

Jacqueline Sarno, owner of CoCo Salon and Spa, told the news portal, “[The name] just makes me feel like it’s going to be the same thing all over again and that scares me as a business owner because I take pride in what I’m doing.”

However, some people in the area are willing to give Insomnia a chance, as long as the owners comply with local business regulations.

Officials in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania may vote to raise business license costs as part of a series of measures to save the city from its current financial crisis.

The city may have to file for bankruptcy and will face “significant and difficult” times ahead, receiver David Unkovic said.

As part of the recovery plan citizens could be faced with higher business license fees, real estate and income taxes.

However, any solution will be dependent on investment from stakeholders. The legislature must also examine the use of interest-rate swaps by the state’s municipalities and authorities.

Nonetheless, before any steps can be implemented Mr. Unkovic must calculate the value of the city’s assets that can be sold or leased.

If civil actions are filed recovery will also be delayed, he predicted.

The crisis coincides with the conviction of the former Pennsylvania House Speaker David DeWeese for the use of public employees and tax dollars for political purposes.

Three international automakers in Alabama have been called on to oppose the state’s new immigration laws, which increase the administrative burden placed on businesses during the licensing process.

Critics of the law have sent letters to the Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler AG, Honda and Hyundai to discuss repealing the law, CBS News has reported.

Parts of the law have already been put on hold by the federal courts. However, governor Robert Bentley and Republican legislative leaders have been criticized for only wanting to tweak the document.

President of the Washington-based Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights told the news provider that they wanted automotive companies to help them overturn the law, which has already placed foreign employees from Mercedes and Honda in a brief detention.

However, the automotive companies have failed to comment on the situation.

Under the new law, businesses must provide documentation when they renew their business license that those persons working for them are legally permitted to do so.

A tow company in Minneapolis, Minnesota (MN) is facing the revocation of its business license after numerous violations of the city’s code.

Cedar Towing & Auction Inc has been sent notice that its license will be revoked, following a police investigation in 2011 that implicated the the company in overcharging vehicle owners.

Although the Hennepin County attorney’s office decided not to prosecute when the investigation concluded last month, the company has remained under scrutiny after being accused of charging $88,400 over the legal limit, stemming from improper storage fees amounting to approximately $71,700.

Since Cedar Towing & Auction Inc’s license settlement hearing in 2007, the company has also been accused of conducting private impound towing services without authorization, providing remuneration to parking lot operators, and failing to transport private impound vehicles to a storage facility, among other offenses.

Dan Rasmus, the attorney for Cedar Towing, claims that “many of the allegations are untrue”.

Officials have the right to pull the license of any business whose owner has shown that they are incapable of following ordinance rules and when there is substantial evidence to support such an allegation.

The debate over whether to change the business license tax system in South Lake Tahoe, California could go to a public vote.

Proposed changes to business tax license structure may face a ballot on June 5th 2012, in a move that will reduce costs for most businesses within the city, the Tahoe Daily Tribune reported.

The change will decrease the amount of tax businesses pay on their gross receipts by approximately five percent and will cap the increase on business license tax from $3,448 to $20,000.

A city staff report explained, “The business license tax will be decreased for approximately 99 percent of the businesses in the City, and increased for 1 percent of businesses.”

However, a similar measure was put on the ballot in November 2010 but was defeated after 50.81 per cent of voters said no.

It is hoped that should the matter go to a vote again this summer the measure will be adopted to help support local businesses and encourage growth.

A controversial adult store in Columbia City, South Carolina has been granted a temporary business license until a final decision is made as to whether it can remain open.

Taboo Adult Superstore applied for a license renewal before the December 31st deadline but expects that it will not have its application granted after residents protested over its existence and officials rushed to pass a new law restricting the business, Free Times reported.

Columbia City Council instituted a new ordinance to determine when and where sexually orientated businesses can operate in the area.

The store is currently in violation of these laws, but is unable to find a location which abides by local ordinances.

While officials claim the law was brought in to govern all business, Taboo claims that it is the only such business to open there in a decade.

However, the stores general manager, who wishes to remain nameless, told the newspaper that things have calmed down since December.

Changes to state requirements in Georgia will alter the business license process for companies.

As of January 1st the Illegal Immigration Reform and Enforcement Act (House Bill 87) requires local governments and businesses to comply with federal and state immigration laws relating to the employ of non-American citizens.

All occupation tax certificate applicants must now submit an affidavit called Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, in addition to a verifiable identification document, such as a passport or driving license, the Weekly reported.

Private employers with 500 or more employees must register for, and use, the federal E-Verify program that checks the employment eligibility of all new workers.

Businesses that do not comply with new ordinances will face strict penalties and possible license revocation.

Georgia has been one of the leading states in instituting mandatory E-Verification.

Officials in Missouri have been called upon to follow in Georgia’s footsteps and be proactive in adopting new immigration legislation changes to the business licensing system.

From now on, the deadline will be more strictly enforced and companies that have not met the deadline could find themselves in the clutches of city attorney Kurt Voss.

“You may recall that in 2011, it was May or June when I brought the list of delinquent businesses to the board and gave them to Mr. Voss to take action,” Mr. Childers said. “I will not do that this year.”

Instead, businesses that did not renew their license by deadline will be presented to Mr. Voss by February 6th.

St. Clair has been forced to take a harder line in monitoring business, as the city is continuing to expand.

Businesses in Salt Lake County, Utah that failed to renew their business license on time could be reprieved from late payment penalties.

County officials have decided to give some 40 businesses the opportunity to document their compliance history to show that they missed the deadline because the county changed its timing of the renewal process rather than through general tardiness, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Councilman Jim Bradley told the newspaper, “This will allow the hearing officer some latitude when he hears their appeals.

“If the business has a history of compliance, [the hearing officer] can waive the late fee or reduce it.”

In 2011 the county changed to a staggered renewal system to avoid a rush in applications, which occurred when all businesses where required to renew by January 1st of every year.

Despite businesses being notified of the change in the system, many companies still believed that they had to renew under the old rules.

Dropping late fee fines will support local businesses at a time when a bleak economy has severely hindered growth.
