Citizen Complaint Leads to Raid of Unlicensed Beers

Pennsylvania State Police officers raided three popular Philadelphia bars known for their wide variety of beer selections, last week. Dozens of officers took part in the simultaneous raids after a citizen complaint that alleged that the exact name of many beers weren’t registered with the state Liquor Control Board.

Resurrection Ale House, Local 44 and Memphis Taproom, all owned by the same owner, were targeted in the raids. Despite the fact the bar owners bought beer legally from licensed Pennsylvania distributors and paid all necessary taxes, there were allegations the owners did not pay the $75 registration fee for each product sold.

The police seized four kegs and 317 bottles, which totaled 60.9 gallons of beer. The owners claimed that more than half of the beer removed was properly registered, but could not be found in registration lists because of “clerical errors” and “blatant ineptitude” between police and the Liquor Control Board.

Nevada State Contractor Qualifications Under Scrutiny from the Secretary of State

To consolidate the business licensing and the corporate registration processes the state of Nevada has recently moved the responsibility for collecting the business license fees from the Department of Taxation to the office of the Secretary of State.
Nevada’s Secretary of State Ross Miller said that businesses contracting with the state will have to prove they are licensed and in good standing in order to do business in the state. This came as a result of the office not being able to confirm proper state registration and licensing for more than a dozen of the 63 contracts waiting for approval. Companies doing business in Nevada must pay $400.00 in fees for the first year. After the first year businesses must pay $200.00 for the business license fee and $125.00 for the annual fee.

Columbia, SC Considers Lowering Business License Fees

The city council in Columbia, South Carolina is considering lowering business license fees in order to encourage business growth within the city limits. The proposal the council is considering would waive business license fees for one year for new businesses and give a 50% discount in the second year. City attorney Ken Gaines believes the plan would be unconstitutional because it would treat new business differently than existing businesses. In a memo to council members Gaines suggested that a better approach would be to reduce fees for all business in a given category, such as retail businesses.

There are currently at least six bills before the Alabama Legislature focusing on employers who hire illegal workers. Some of the bills focus on certain counties, while others would cover the whole state. All of the bills have a similar penalty. A business that does not verify the status of its workers would lose its business license. All bills are awaiting committee action.

Utah’s House of Representatives narrowly passed a vote, which will require business owners to prove they’re in the United States legally before being issued a new business license.

The vote passed by one vote after initially failing by one vote in an earlier sentence.
